I know QuickBooks 2011 only came out a few months ago, but it’s not too early to be thinking about the next version of QuickBooks and what 2012 needs to fit your needs. What do you want to see in QuickBooks 2012?  There were a ton of great features in QuickBooks 2011, but what do you think of them and what are you looking for in QuickBooks 2012? We’ve been talking with accountants, CPAs, and business managers to better understand what they need in QuickBooks 2012 so we can forward it on to Intuit. Just like the prior version of QuickBooks, we’re expecting some pretty hefty changes to QuickBooks 2012. Here are some features we’ll be looking for:

  1. Reclassify transactions in batch instead of individually: Reclassifying individual transactions in QuickBooks is still a pain, so we want to see some work done here.
  2. Faster load times in QuickBooks 2012: Customers are performance hounds! We want to see the entire program load more quickly and hog less RAM.
  3. Identify multiple payments that appear to be sales tax payments: We dug into this to better understand what readers are saying–we want better payment identification features so we know where the cash is going without thinking twice!
  4. Quickly see and then fix inventory discrepancies from one screen: Doing inventory on one screen will be a big win, saving a lot of time for both accountants and day to day business managers.
  5. Match unapplied vendor and customer payments/credits with invoices/charges from one window: Again, this one is about accountant productivity. We want to see one single screen in QuickBooks 2012 with unapplied payments and credits together for ease of use.
  6. Clear-up undeposited funds account from one screen: Less about productivity and more about clearing mental clutter. Clean up the undeposited funds screen to make it easier to work with.

Upgrading QuickBooks 2008 to QuickBooks 2012 is easy.  All you have to do is purchase the QuickBooks upgrade and your QuickBooks 2008 data file will work easily with QuickBooks 2012.

QuickBooks expert and power user Scott Gregory has several feature recommendations for QuickBooks 2012.  Here is an excerpt from Scott’s blog:

  • Give the Customer Information screens a complete makeover – as mentioned last year, QuickBooks has space for just 2 contact names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses? Seriously? It’s time to bring this portion of QuickBooks into the twenty-first century. It’s been pretty much the same since way back to QuickBooks 1999. I’m not referring to the Customer Center itself, but the specific information that is being stored for each customer record. Customers should not have to buy a separate CRM package just because they want to store contact information for more than two people in QuickBooks.
  • Give the Vendor Information screens a complete makeover – same as above. But for vendors.
  • Give the “Modify Report” button more functionality – if memory serves me correctly, this interface has been pretty much the same since QuickBooks 99 as well. It’s great that there are third party programs out there that offer advanced report-writing options, but it’s time to allow us to add subtotals and have more filtering and formatting options right within QuickBooks.

Let us know what you think!  Drop us some comments for what you’ll be looking for in QuickBooks 2012.

Update: See the comments below for what Mikael Sosa recommends for his hotel. He has some great feature recommendations for QuickBooks 2012.

  1. I’d like to see faster load times for the entire program…it hogs a lot of my RAM currently while running other programs.

  2. I’d like to see faster load time for QuickBooks, b/c it hogs all my RAM.

  3. We are a very small company of 2 people. We use intuit credit card processing online as well as quickbooks for mac & I would really like to see a small business like mine be able to afford mobile credit card processing and have it be tied into my quickbooks on our mac. I have an android phone but I don’t process enough credit cards in a month to use pay for go payments. Other companies have processing INCLUDED so why should I stay with intuit.

  4. I would like to see inventories balances move in balance sheet accounts and not just in the inventory valuation summary, this is crucial for hotels that need to transfer balances from its Storeroom to outlets such as its bar, restaurant and giftshops as currently it requires a journal entry to do this every time items are requisitioned. Some other stuff that would make quickbooks sore above alot of accounting systems and be more friendly for hotels are:

Ability to Close and open periods
Ability to process inventory returns or negative PO’s
Ability to enter Income and expenses by cost centers or departments
Inventory Transfers with not only the items but the costs as well and the option of these values moving to the balance sheet accounts E.g Requisitions moving from Warehouse to an outlet like Restaurant. So that inventory values can be seen on the balance sheet by department
Ability to edit items without switching to Single User Mode everytime
Ability to accrue payroll expenses without having to write the checks

I must say Quickbooks has done a wonderful job and if it could make some of these additions to its already great system I know a lot more hotels would not think twice to use this system. Great job in adding the multiple locations on the inventory, I was able to get three hotels to use this system over Peach Tree,

  5. I expect to see customer number
I expect to see distribution analysis for example if i make a group item e.g
    Fees
    Adminsion Fees 200
    Activity Fees 1000
    Tuition Fees 1500
when am receiving payment, i expect it to allocate the received amount accordingly e.g if a student paid 2000, then it allocates 200 to admision,1000 to activity and 800 to tuition

  6. Sure would be a complete package if you would add Point of Sale to the Accounting package with a more robust inventory management capability similar to Peachtree or Managemore Software, with Serial Number and Warranty tracking. Also, keep multi-user capability. Would be willing to pay more because the software would actually have useful improvements and actual changes made to it rather than the cosmetic changes that seem to be offered at each retirement cycle most recently.

  7. For the Canadian version, I would like (PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE) to see the restriction that only Outlook can be used to email paperwork removed and allow web-based email (gmail, hotmail, yahoo, etc.) also be used.

  8. i wanted to see the (CRM) included even if i have to pay more but i know everything is in one place, what’s important on a basic busines

    1- save notes and dated
2- every email that contain a transaction been save on a customer history
3- attach a document on the local QB file Such Contracts
4- on an other firm th at i have i was force to hire NETSUITE for my CRM+ Acounting, i wanted to be able to run campaign, track sales that cost me average 10k per year but i needed.
5- Okay i know there is people that might not been able to buy the qb due to the price

  9. BUT HOW ABOUT IF QB SALE THIS IN MODULES YOU’LL BUY WHAT YOU NEED.

  10. Canada version – we need CRM and document management. Would love being able to attach note (like a sticky) to vendor or client. Also would be nice to take notes when phone phones. Something like a button that when a customer phones we hit the button and a date stamp stamps the time and
date then you can scroll to the customer name and track the note, it would
keep info on a calendar and attach to the customer or vendor.

  11. I would like to be able design and print barcoded part label(s) out of invoice. Or if there is label creating program can be integrated with QB that will aloud users to create part labels out of invoice.

  12. I would like the ability to upload payroll data to QuickBooks from an Excel worksheet.

    thank you

  13. I would like to see the feature where you can copy one employees time record for the week and paste into another employee.

  14. Customers, Vendors, Employees and Other Names: Limit = 14,500. This is a combined limit – the total of ALL of these lists cannot exceed 14,500.
I am a one owner website business with over 20,000 customers in the last 10 years and I would like QuickBooks pro to be able increase the customer base, and this way I will be able to upgrade to a new version of QuickBooks pro. When I go over the limit of 14,500 I have to start fresh with a new company on the same QuickBooks. It doesn’t make any sense to me and it’s cumbersome to go back and forth between the old and new to find my customers. I can’t afford enterprise solutions to have a larger customer base. You should be able to include a larger customer base in QuickBooks pro without having to pay a large amount of money. I would bet if you offer this extra feature you would sell more of your QuickBooks pro, and we won’t have to switch back and forth between old and new.
